MOOREA    Very visibly afloat some 10 nautical miles to the north-west from Papeete, the capital of French Polyneia, the distinct peaks with lush green amid the fringing reefs provoke homage to what attracted so many since the days of Captain James Cook and Paul Gauguin.  "Bali Hai in its origin", as they say, the view of this peak overwhelms at the mouth of the Bay of Opunohu.		MOOREA　 モオレア島 「モーレア」と書かれることが 多いが、現地語の正統な響きは モ・オ・レア。 TAHITIの主都PAPEETE パペ・エテの北西沖約20kmに 美しく浮かぶ島影は 面白い形の緑の峰々が 珊瑚礁に縁取られ、あこがれを かきたてる。 　この地に名を残すクック船長や 画家ゴーギャンをも魅了したように。 Baie de OPUNOHU  オプノフ湾口から望む峰の姿が 「BALI HAI の原像」といわれ、 強烈な印象で圧倒する。

Authentic, for many, is the original sound track version.  The cover version by the Mantovani Orchestra, almost a classic, follows.  But never to be forgotten is the chic Broadway Musical version recorded in 1949, with THE original cast, bearing the overtone of the era. Juanita Hall sang both in the Broadway version and in the movie, as the impressive scene unfolds of this imaginary island, forbidden to the G. I.'s, as its legendary peak emerges from the "low flying clouds"  in changing colors.		また、映画では唄と同時進行で 七色に変化する雲間から 神秘的な峰が姿を現す、 「一般アメリカ兵立ち入り禁止」の "禁断の島"の名でもある。 ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK版が 強烈な印象で圧倒する。 　この曲を唄うBLOODY MARY ブラディ・メアリー役は舞台も映画も 同じフアニタ・ホールが演じた。

The South Pacific  Originally a successful Broadway musical since 1949 through the '50's, this masterpiece movie, requiring an intermission during the theater projection, gained the global popularity.  Even by today's standard, the highest grade image on the 70mm film, as well as its sound tracks recorded with the prime technology of the mid-century, remain distinguished.	1965年に日本での 再公開にあわせて 発売された Original Sound Track版 30cm LPレコードは 当時としては珍しい 見開きの豪華な ジャケット。 VICTOR盤。	The South Pacific　     南太平洋   1949年の初演以来、 '50年代を通じてN. Y. の BROAD WAY MUSICAL として大成功した舞台を、 別のCASTINGで映画化した もので、1958年に公開された。 上映途中で休憩をはさむほどの 大作。 　巾70mm のフィルムを使い、 高品位を極めた映像と、当時 最高水準の技術で録音された  ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKは、 今日でも一流。
Embedded in the exquisite melodies are the eternal themes of struggles in overcoming the prejudice on "the people whose skin is oddly made", and the anxiety in a love involving the drastic differences in their ages and backgrounds, adding profound implications even half a century later.		数々の名曲には、 肌の色が違う人々への恐れや偏見、 年齢の差に悩む恋心、 苦境をくぐりぬける喜びが 優美な旋律にこめられている。 当時はもちろん、ほぼ半世紀後の 現在でも秀逸で、特に歌詞を 理解すると奥が深い。

Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener    Assorting the episodes that took place in the various locations in the "Pacific Theater" during the World War �U, this publication in 1947 led to the renowned Broadway musical in 1949, then, developing further into the production of the movie, released in 1958.  This publication gained the Pulitzer Prize in 1948, in the Fiction category.		Tales of the South Pacific 　「南太平洋物語」 James A. Michener が1945年に至る 第二次世界大戦中の南太平洋で 展開されたさまざまな逸話をまとめて 1947年に出版した。 　 Pulitzer Prize 　ピュリッツァー賞を Fiction 部門で 受賞したのは翌1948年。 　この本をもとに、1949年に New YorkのBROAD WAY で MUSICALとして初めて 上演され、1958年に映画化された。

第二次世界大戦の戦火はこの島までは及ばなかった。

1942年 (昭和17年)、開戦の翌年、 「南方進出」した大日本帝国陸海軍は ニューギニアからソロモン群島にかけて 連合軍と死闘を重ねた。 　補給に苦しみ、餓死者を多数出して 「転進」という名目の敗退に至る時期が 物語の時代と重なる。 　珊瑚海海戦も同時期。

James A. Michener が1947年に出版した Tales of the South Pacific 「南太平洋物語」は、第二次世界大戦中の 南太平洋で展開されたさまざまな逸話を まとめていて、舞台公演や映画では、あくまで 「場所不明」の「南太平洋のどこか」での物語 として展開する。 　実話の現場となった島々は、史実から、 「戦闘が行われたのは SOLOMONS  ソロモン群島」 だ。 　一方、「ロマンスの舞台でもあり、基地と なった島と、対岸の禁断の島バリ・ハイは、  NEW HEBRIDES  ニュー・ヘブリディーズ諸島」というのが 一致した見方だ。 　当時はイギリスとフランスの共同統治の 島々だったが、現在は独立して VANU ATU ヴァヌ・アトゥとなっている。 　今も時々熔岩を噴き上げる活火山の島々で、 バリ・ハイ同様、険しい峰もあれば、白砂の浜の 沖に珊瑚礁がひろがる緑豊かな島もあり、 なによりも、1942〜1943年頃、ソロモン諸島まで 南進してきた大日本帝國陸海軍に直面した、 連合国軍の反撃準備拠点だった。 　モオレア島をはじめ、TAHITI の島々は、 さらに4,500km余りも東に離れている。 当時のプロペラ機では、10 時間以上かかる 大変な距離だ。
